Club Activities

Monthly general meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month except for July and August. These meetings are open to the public!

We also organize an impressive number of other activities such as educational seminars, public outreach events, as well as group observing sessions throughout the year.

The RASC Hamilton News Group (some would call it a "blog") is a really cool and easy way to communicate with your fellow members, ask for advice, post a favorite photo, check the club events calendar, and a ton of other useful things.

What is a Yahoo News Group?

It is a free service (think of it as an "app") offered by Yahoo that allows millions of clubs, just like ours, an easy way to communicate with each other. They provide easy to use tools that would be too difficult to duplicate on our main website. For example:

Club Events Calendar - By far the best and easiest way to find out what's happening with clubs events.
Photo Gallery - Every member of the newsgroup can create their own photo album and post favorite photos to share with other members. And it is really easy to do.
Favorite Web Links - Got a favorite astronomy website? Consider sharing it with the group!
Files Section - A nifty repository for useful documents. Have an interesting article or hard to find Owners Manual? Consider sharing it with other members.

How to "Join the RASC Hamilton News Group"

It's easy and fast, but first you need to create a "Yahoo Identity". This is how Yahoo gives you the power to control what information (your identity security) is shared with members of any Yahoo Group. After creating your Yahoo Identity you will then be able to join any Yahoo News Group (there are literally millions of groups).

How is the News Group Different than the original "Hamilton RASCals" email blog?

The original RASCals email blog was really nothing more than a distribution list that sent an email to all club members. The original RASCals email blog is operated by RASC National. If you are not an RASC member then you can't receive emails from our club.

But our goal is to open up our club to the general public in hopes that they will become a club member. The Yahoo Newsgroup gives us the power to do that AND....as you now know, the Yahoo Newsgroup is way more than just an "email blog".

Why should I join the Yahoo News Group?

Within the next few months we will be phasing out the RASCals email blocg (it will still exist but we won't be using it). So if you want to be notified about club activities you will need to get "on board" with the Yahoo Newsgroup.

Why not use both Yahoo and RASCals?

Frankly, it is WAY too much work. What you are reading now was created by an unpaid volunteer who already donates a tremendous amout of time. For the good of our club, we need to devote less enery on administation and more on the things that have the greatest benefit to the members.
